Shibori - Designs & Techniques - Mandy Southan

This is an excellent book to start on your journey for learning Shibori.  If you don't know Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist dyeing technique that contemporary American dyers have enlivened with tie-dye-inspired colors, resulting in an exuberant interplay between color and texture.  In this book the artist demonstrates her rendition of American shibori, sharing her authoritative knowledge of silk, dyes, dyeing, and discharge and revealing how to formulate colors, create a variety of resists, and set texture.  Mandy Southan had created an excellent manual on the art of American shibori. Her work shimmers with iridescent color and eye-catching pleating, which she creates by combining pole-wrapping, with folding techniques and clamping along with other types of resists with discharge and overdyeing.  Instructions are given for creating the wonderfully pleated texture on the front cover of the book.

Elfriede Moller - Shibori

The art of fabric tying, folding, pleating and dyeing.  This is a great beginner's book on the recent Shibori painting movement.  (Personally I have been playing with the ideas and projects of silk painting for about three years now and have been having a great time on my off times.)  Known as a form of tie-dye, this style goes beyond the explosive designs of the 60's and 70's.  Shibori is tie-dye all grown up.  Fabrics range from silk velvet (for scarves and throws), to wool challis and the many weights of silks.  Four hand methods and one pleater method make up some of the most beautiful designs.   Each method is shown with step by step pictures with numerous examples to delight your senses.   Do your design in browns and golds and you might end up with a tiger or lion print, roar!  Here is a sample of Shibori from the book pleated with a smocking pleater.
