" Retro Patterns from the Past"

FW#249 1930's Day Dress XS-3XL

In the late 1930's, the rich and glamorous were glittering distractions from the grim realities of everyday life.   Movie stars like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford in their sultry glory.  Celebrity royals like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.  Scandalous fashion designers like Cahnel and Schiaparelli.  As American s began to pull out of the Great Depression, they watched and mimicked the fun and fancy ways of the wealthy as best they could.  World War II was yet to come and U.S. citizens revealed in an updbeat, although naive, mood.

Fashions toward the end of the decade combined the frugality of the lean Depression years with touches of Hollywood extravagance.  Our 1930's Day Dress uses fabric economically, yet manages to look chic and trendy for it's time.  Suggested Fabrics: Fabrics with drape, such as rayon, medium-weight silk, microfiber.

FW#264 Monte Carlo Dress Misses 6-16

A popular 1920's fashion among the young, adventurous 'flapper' girls was the straight-sided drop-waist dress with handkerchief hem, worn with tunic tops made out of revealingly sheer fabrics.

This pattern is inspired by the captivating styles of Paul Poiret and Jacques Doucet.   The sheath dress features the drop waist and cylindrical silhouette so popular of the time.  It is finished off with a bias-cut handkerchief hem that swishes seductively about nylon-stockinged legs and shows off a bit of ankle.   Fanciful decoration was all the rage, in beads, sumptuous embroidery and bejeweled ornaments.   Embellish the dress according to the occasion, using the vintage design motifs included in the pattern.

Included with the dress pattern are two simple-sew tunics which can be embellished with tassels (as shown) or made from super sheer fabrics for a delicate contrast to the dress.
