Punchneedle Embroidery by Miranda Stewart
Way back in the mid 1970's I was introduced to the Folkwear pattern Russian Settler's Dress which featured the craft known as Igolochkoy (tm). This pattern started the craze which became known as the wildly popular punch needle embroidery that continues today. Miranda Stewart, a household name in the quilting and art to wear world at the time became well known for her drawings and designs for the beautiful delicate punch needle embroidery using the original Igolochkoy (tm) Needle which comes in 3 sizes for 1 to 6 strands of embroidery floss. (When I can find my blouse I made from the pattern I will post the Gryphons that I embroidered on my sleeve caps.) We are delighted to see that Miranda has produced a book on the craft after so many years of practice and hope that you will enjoy reading a piece of embroidery history. "This book is a complete guide to the art of traditional punchneedle embroidery, including the many effects and textures that can be created with punchneedle. The book includes a brief history of the Russian origins of the technique with the Igolochkoy (tm) Needle, along with a comprehensive review of the tools and materials used. Each technique is illustrated with a small sample and instructions for the reader to try out the technique.
Marinda Stewart shares a lifetime of experience as an artist, designer, and recognized expert on the Igolochkoy(tm) punchneedle and teaches you how to use punchneedle embroidery on a wide range of background fabrics, from rough and earth silk tussah to the finest velvet, and how to create an enormous range of textures and effects."
If you are unfamiliar with punchneedle, one side of the fabric has loops and the other side is a chain stitch. Comes from tambour hook embroidery in Moorish countries.
Enclosed spiral hardbound book.

Russian Punchneedle Embroidery - Gail Bird $4.95
Here's a fun book that has been around since 1981 (new edition of old volume)
which sparked the punch needle craze of the 80's. Punchneedle embroidery
is the art of working one basic stitch (the chain stitch) with special needles
to create a raised ornamental design on woven fabric. Using the original
set of tiny punchneedles (we're getting them soon) you can work a variety
of beautiful effects, details and textures that can be easily achieved by
using this stitch with different size needles, threads and fabrics.
This book is a complete guide to the old Russian folk style of punchneedle
embroidery, and contains descriptions of the equipment needed, detailed
instructions for stitching, easy-to-follow diagrams, and iron-on transfer
patterns including flowers, birds, butterflies, animals, etc.
Popular as a hobby, a craft and art form, punchneedle embroidery has an amazing
variety of uses: decorate fashion accessories such as purses, necklaces,
combs, belts, pins, earrings, scarves, shawls, aprons as well as doll-house
rugs and tapestries.

Iron-On Transfer Pencil - Blue
$3.25
An iron-on transfer pencil for you to copy designs onto your fabric. It's very easy to use. Using a regular sharp pencil, trace out your design onto tracing paper or vellum, turn the paper over and with the iron-on pencil trace over the design. Turn the paper over and place the side with the blue pencil lines onto the fabric and iron the design onto your fabric. Et Voila! Your design is on your fabric ready for embroidery. Can be used about 2-3 times before you need to re-trace the design with the pencil.
This is a perfect way to get embroidery designs onto your 'canvas' waiting for your embroidery.
One note. We suggest you do a test image on a piece of scrap fabric so you understand how to transfer a design before marking your main fabric. The pencil markings do NOT totally wash out so make certain to completely cover the lines with your embroidery.
