Patterns also suitable for dolls.   Easy to Sew Kimono Sleeve Daygowns and bonnets for Preeemies Sizes 1lb, 2 1/2 lbs, 3-4lbs, 5-6 lbs.   Daygown Pattern Length.   Suitable fabrics like cashmere flannel, Swiss Flannel, and crushed cottons are ideal for the preemie daygown.  Traditional heirloom sewing fabrics like Imperial batiste and broadcloth are fine, and Swiss batiste work well for the dressier variations.  Consider the type of embellishment when choosing your fabric, using the heavier fabrics for machine embroidery and the sheer fabrics for hand embroidery and shadow work.  A cotton fabric or cotton blend fabric is suitable for the bonnet.  A fabric with some body will hold the shape of the bonnet better than a softer fabric.

"Mary Anna's Smocked Bonnet" features a lace-edged ruffle on the back edge of the smocking which encircles the baby's tiny face without hiding it. The newborn size pattern is unique in that it actually fits a newborn baby and can be worn home from the hospital. The pattern features a growth tuck at the center back seam and an open back casing so that the ribbon can be adjusted to add fullness as the baby grows.

The Bonnet Collection Book 1 by Nancy Coburn

Each of the bonnet styles included in this book features construction with an open back casing.   This is the easiest bonnet construction to sew and it affords a small growth allowance.   The casing can be adjusted to fit the baby's head, both when it is first made, and as the baby grows.  There are three bonnet styles - the smocked bonnet, the heirloom bonnet and the handkerchief bonnet.  The smocked bonnet has elasticity and can probably be worn longer than the other bonnet styles.  The handkerchief bonnet can be made from any of a variety of handkerchiefs which can be found in linen shops and antique shops.  This bonnet is fun because of the variety of materials to work with and because the construction is so easy.  You will find detailed size guidelines in this book for making a handkerchief bonnet.

CE#14 Gertrude's Baby Cap

This infant cap is appropriate for boy or girl babies.  The front of the cap can be plain or embellished with a variety of decorative treatments such as lace trim, embroidery, or hemstitching.

Several time-saving features reduce construction time: 

• Front of cap is folded back, creating a self-band or flap. 
• The crown is faced, eliminating the challenge of  rolling and whipping  a fabric circle. 
• Lower edge of cap is finished with a bias facing.
